Lately I’ve been pining to go on holiday to Germany again, I just love the country…the people are really friendly (except the wired gypos that hang around Berlin Zoo) and there is so much to do there….plus beer in McDonnalds is also a good thing.
BUT it just sucks being an english person in a forrign country as we do not take the time to learn a 2nd language fluently and I just hate that. Yes the majority of Brits abroad are perfectly happy with their ‘Pointy Shouty’ method of communication but I’m not, I just think it’s rude not to speak a 2nd language.
Yes I did German at school, but all I can do is count to 10 (I’ve forgotten 1-19 and after 20 I can kinda remember them) say hello/goodbye and maybe say left and right. And it sucks when your abroad and you can’t communicate, what makes it worse is each time I’ve been to Germany and tried (and failed miserbly) to comunicate in German EVERY German person I have spoken to spoke better English than I did.
Schools here only teach a very basic level for a 2nd language and that really does not help us especially when we are meant to be part of europe, no wonder no one likes us there (thats if you ignore the fact that Mr. Blair made us the US’s bitch).
I would love to take the time and take clases but with my shift patterns at work that is just impractical and currently I havent the drive to stick at learning anything on my own, be it a 2nd language or my LPIC level one stuff - moving house can not be helping with this either.
