So I received this ‘Right to Die’ leaflet and card a few weeks ago from Swinton Library after hearing a discussion about it on Radio 4. To be honest, I ordered it more for curiosity than anything at that point and because it opened a series of questions for myself. (Morbid much?!) Although this is certainly an issue that crops up every now again, the ‘what if’…and something that people always have an opinion on, but often are unable to effect because of euthanasia, incapacity, laws etc.
The act allows adults to draw up “advance decisions” stating what sort of treatment they don’t want should they lose capacity. They build on the principle of “living wills” but, crucially, mean that doctors are legally bound to abide by a patient’s wish to refuse life-sustaining treatment.
More here.
This could be quite good, but also quite bad. As it would depend on the individuals mental state. I wonder what checks, if any, are put in place for this?
